Cobertura Design Information

TYPE BY Cobertura family, designed by Thomas Thiemich, was published in May 2019 on Type By launch, next to Gustella, Rosalinde, Fakt Mono, and Fakt Stencil.

Thomas set out to design Cobertura with a flabbergasting set of features in mind: a firmly condensed script-like typeface with a pointed-nib contrast.

Over the past fifteen years, Thomas’ designs have been associated with strict, neutral, logical, and traditionally-sound sanserif typefaces, such as Fakt superfamily or Remo designs. With Cobertura, Thomas sets to expand his oeuvre. And it’s not the script-like character that is surprising here. It’s Corbertura’s pen-based contrast, that is. For contrast - the variation between a letter’s thick and thinner parts - is usually connected to a particular writing tool, such as a brush or broad nib. However, contrast applied over a pure sanserif construction, which tried to avoid contrast in the first place, is a serious challenge and Thomas took it on.

Cobertura is a novel stylistic approach for Thomas. Yet multiple other qualities make Cobertura a typical Thiemich design: thought over, meticulously designed, surveyed to the smallest detail. Nothing in Cobertura happens accidentally. Take, for example, the swash-like elements. They are swashy but not much more than that — the outlines flow just enough to convey that swash-like feel. Let’s look at a couple of other critical features of Cobertura’s design: a near-modular skeleton and the freedom of a script. These concepts seem a contradiction of terms, right? But despite the initial impression of a paradox, Thiemich manages to marry these extremes, harmoniously so. And, while these qualities may, just may, not be enough for designers who prefer abundance and muscular movement, to those who aim to communicate to a large audience and convey exact connotative values, Corbertura will be a mighty tool.

Cobertura comes in an impressive range of seven weights of roman and italic designs, across six widths. Its character set is fully equipped: an effective range of stylistic alternates; multiple figure sets (each in tabular and proportional widths); fractions; comprehensive superiors, inferiors, numerators and denominators; case-sensitive punctuation sets; mathematical and monetary symbols; arrows; standard and discretionary ligatures; and a complete range of accents for all Western, Central and East European languages based on the Latin script.

Cobertura is available in OTF CFF, TTF, WOFF, and WOFF2 formats. Legacy font formats are available on request.
