Cobertura Design Information

TYPE BY Cobertura is designed by Thomas Thiemich and is one of his latest commercial releases next to Gustella, Rosalinde, Fakt Mono, and Fakt Stencil, published in May 2019 on the occasion of Type By launch.

Thomas designed Cobertura with specific design features in mind bring together a unique set of qualities: on one hand - firmly condensed proportions, but on another, unlike the usual condensed designs, it leaves an impression of a script typeface.

Over the past fifteen years, Thomas’ designs were associated with strict, neutral, logical, and traditionally-sound sanserif typefaces, such as Fakt superfamily or Remo designs. With his latest releases - Cobertura, and Gustella - Thomas expands in his oeuvre so far.

An expansion, not so much caused by the script-like character, but more because Corbertura is a design with a pen-based contrast. Contrast, the variation between the thick and the thinner parts of a letter, is usually connected to the use of a certain writing tool, such as a brush or broad nib. Contrast applied over a pure sanserif construction, that tries to avoid any contrast at all costs, is a serious challenge and Thomas decided to take it on. Cobertura is therefore the only Thiemich’s design so far showcasing such a contrast.

Even if Cobertura is a novel stylistic approach coming from Thomas, there are multiple qualities that makes it a typical Thiemich design: everything, even the smallest detail, is subjected to a keen eye and strong control. Take for example the swash-like elements. They are swash-y but not much more than that, the outlines move just enough to transfer that swash-like feel. A second point worth mentioning is that two important characteristics of the Cobertura design, a near modular skeleton and the freedom of a script, seem to be hostile to each other. So at first this seems a paradox but Thiemich manages to combine both antagonists to a new quality (or unity?).

For all designers who do prefer abundance and strong movement this might be not enough. But for those who like to communicate to a great unknown public and wish to be very precise in the connotative values they transfer, Corbertura will be a perfect partner for, as nothing in Cobertura happens accidentally.

Cobertura comes in an astounding range of seven weights of roman and italic designs across six widths. Its character set includes a well-thought range of stylistic alternates; multiple figure sets (each in tabular and proportional widths); fractions; comprehensive superiors, inferiors, numerators and denominators; case sensitive punctuation sets; mathematical and monetary symbols; arrows; standard and discretionary ligatures; and a complete range of accents for all Western, Central and East European languages based on the Latin script.

Cobertura is available in OTF CFF, TTF, WOFF, and WOFF2 formats.
