Gustella Stripes Design Information

TYPE BY Gustella superfamily is designed by Thomas Thiemich and is one of his latest commercial releases next to Cobertura, Rosalinde, Fakt Mono, and Fakt Stencil, published in May 2019 on the occasion of Type By launch.

Gustella is a very specific cherry on the pie — this could be the shortest and most eloqvent description of Gustella, which was conceived to catch and endear the graphic designer’s eye. Placing Gustella in the not-so-distant past, it might be related to the extreme slab serifs. The ones we see in Hollywood ‘Western’ movies, mostly used to compose the word ‘WANTED’.

This late nineteenth century ‘WANTED’ model, which was in principle already over the top, was nothing compared to the lettering of the hazy ‘universe’ of Hippy-culture and its sense of freedom [created by its lettering]. This surely contributed to the acceptance of high contrast treatment within the letters, which simply cannot be more extreme, or more against the grain of tradition.

In the seventies this phenomena slowly soaked the graphic design of all sorts, but still belonged to a subculture of sorts. Graphic designers took out the strong waves and applied a slight less extreme contrast - a god example of which can be seen on the record sleeve of David Bowie’s Hunky Dory album, released in 1973.

After another 4 decades, such extreme display-designs have returned, and can benefit from the influence of precision introduced by the digital technology. In skilful hands, the level of contrasted ‘juicyness’ can be cranked up significantly and so the style might enjoy a second life.

Gustella answers to that challenge to its fulles, yet it is of course much more then just a skilful re-drawing. Gustella is a contemporary design that manages to bring novelty to the reversed contrasted-designs niche. Thiemich’s mastery shines in all Gustella’s variants, from the Solid version to the Boxed, Inline, and spectacular Stripes version.

Gustella consists of four weights of roman designs, available across four families: Solid, Stripes, Inline, and Boxed. All variants share identical metrics and can be used overprinted to a spectacular effect. Its character set includes stylistic alternates, figures (each in tabular and proportional widths); fractions; comprehensive superiors, inferiors, numerators and denominators; case sensitive punctuation sets; mathematical and monetary symbols; arrows; standard and discretionary ligatures (with their stylistic alternates); and a complete range of accents for all Western, Central and East European languages based on the Latin script.

Gustella fonts are available in OTF CFF, TTF, WOFF, and WOFF2 formats.
