Couteau Design Information
TYPE BY Couteau is designed by Pierre Pané-Farré, and is part of the Stencil Fonts Series. Couteau is Pané-Farré’s second published typeface, joining his Orly Stencil, both released in 2012.
Couteau is shaped by cutting. Brisk curves, sharp corners, and abrupt angles are common among letters cut quickly with knives or chisels. In skillful hands these tools generate letters that are dynamic, spirited, and direct in their making. Berthold Wolpe’s Albertus typeface (The Monotype Corporation, 1935–40), with its origins in chisel-cut bronze lettering, illustrates this beautifully.
Couteau (in French, ‘knife’), like Albertus, captures the spirit and energy of cut letters. Long sweeping curves contrast strikingly with sharp, angular serifs. A slanted roman frame adds momentum. What results is a typeface that is at once friendly, self-assured, and assertive in all kinds of display typography.
Couteau is available in OTF CFF, TTF, WOFF, and WOFF2 formats. Legacy font formats are available on request.
The Stencil Fonts Series was launched on April 19 2012 to accompany the exhibition 'Between Writing & Type: the Stencil Letter' held at Catapult Gallery, Antwerp. Curated by Eric Kindel and Fred Smeijers, the exhibition showcased the history and development of the stencil letter and displayed a selection of historical and contemporary artifacts and their applications.
